Walt Mzengi Corey is a Tanzanian born writer, director, and cinematographer based between Dar es Salaam and New York City. He holds an MFA in Film from NYU Tisch, where they were both an Ang Lee Scholar and a BAFTA Scholar. In 2025, they were selected for the Locarno Film Festival’s Filmmakers Academy, a ten-day intensive for emerging directors from around the world. Their short film Katope was licensed by Netflix through the UNESCO: African Folktales Reimagined Anthology, screened at international festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, and won the Grand Prix at Dakar Court. They were also invited to participate on a panel for World KiSwahili Day in the ECOSOC Chamber at the UN headquarters in New York, where they represented Tanzania’s film community as a speaker. He continues to pursue the production of stories that explore the more delicate and often unspoken truths of humanity and society.
